Indiana finds an answer
Zach Osterman
It’s going to have to come through the air today. The ground game just isn’t there. But Josh Hoover was outstanding on that drive, hitting on completions of 19, 14 and 21 yards. Indiana gets the two-point try, which would make another touchdown plus PAT a field goal lead.
No. 5 Ohio State 19, No. 4 Indiana 15, 10:30 remaining 4Q.

Indiana backed up against the wall now
Zach Osterman
Ohio State goes for it on 4th and short. Sayin makes a frankly pretty pedestrian throw on a deep shot to Jeremiah Smith. Jamari Sharpe probably could have cut under it and knocked it down but he couldn’t find it, and Ohio State goes up two scores, in a game where Indiana’s only managed one so far. Two-point try no good.
No. 5 Ohio State 19, No. 4 Indiana 7, 12:46 remaining 4Q.

Ohio State football stats vs. IU – end of third quarter

2:56 pm ET
END OF 3Q: No. 5 Ohio State leads No. 4 Indiana, 13-7.
Zach Osterman
The Hoosiers aren’t getting enough of anything consistently to move the ball into places where they’re dangerous. The turnovers have been an issue. Curt Cignetti’s decision to call timeout then try a field goal that felt hopeful given Nico Radicic’s leg also smacks of a coach that still doesn’t have a great feel for his team, perhaps unsurprising given this is the toughest team by far Indiana’s faced so far. Hoosiers need to give the crowd a reason to get back into this game. Not a lot of energy in the stadium right now, and understandably so.
2:54 pm ET

IU kicker Nico Radcic’s 55-yard field goal attempt was lined up but fell short with 1:56 left in the third. Ohio State took over at the OSU 45 yard line.

IU football fumbles again, OSU recovers
Chris Sims
IU quarterback Josh Hoover was sacked for a loss of 11 yards and fumbled during the play thanks to a hit by Ohio State’s Jaylen McClain. The Buckeyes’ T.J. Alford recovered the ball at the OSU 38 yard line with 9:05 left in the third quarter.
2:33 pm ET
Indiana making uncharacteristic mistakes
Zach Osterman
That sack fumble on Josh Hoover might be better assigned to a good design on the blitz from Ohio State. Matt Patricia left Indiana short a blocker on Hoover’s blind side. But between turnovers, missed shots downfield in the passing game (that throw to Becker in the end zone might have been one) and the missed field goal, Indiana is uncharacteristically making the mistakes we’re accustomed to seeing the Hoosiers force in opponents.
No. 4 Ohio State 13, No. 5 Indiana 7, 9:05 remaining 3Q.
2:24 pm ET
IU fumble leads to 3 more Ohio State points
Zach Osterman
Indiana’s start to the second half goes disastrously, as Davion Chandler’s long catch and run ends in a forced fumble (by former IU commit Jay Timmons). Ohio State recovers and hits a couple chunk plays, before good third-down coverage from Jamari Sharpe forces the Buckeyes into a field goal. The last 10 minutes of football have not been the Hoosiers’ finest.
No. 5 Ohio State 13, No. 4 Indiana 7, 11:51 remaining 3Q.

Assorted thoughts:
- Hard to look past that end-of-half sequence. Josh Hoover did so well to construct that last Indiana drive (12 plays, 66 yards), but then he missed an uncovered Brock Schott in the end zone on third down, and Nico Radicic missed the ensuing field goal try. Ohio State responded with a 15-play, 80-yard drive that ended on a fourth-down conversion for a touchdown. That’s a momentum swing that really could come to define this game.
- Neither quarterback has been particularly good. Josh Hoover is struggled to process Ohio State’s coverage. The Buckeyes’ five-man defensive backfield is giving him fits. Julian Sayin has been a little better statistically but has the pick. He’s been sacked twice and hit a whole lot more. Nobody’s star receivers are really involved yet.
- Indiana’s defense is playing so well. That last drive was hurt by the long completion to Chris Henry Jr., but the pressure and the run fits have been great so far.
- Beating a dead horse, but those last two drives do feel like everything. When the margins between these teams are so small, you just can’t miss those windows.

Potential momentum swing against Indiana
Zach Osterman
The Hoosiers build their best and longest drive of the game, down to within sight of the end zone. But Josh Hoover misses an uncovered Brock Schott in the back corner of the end zone on third down, and then Nico Radicic bangs his short attempt off the near upright and out. Not a game where you can throw away points like that.
No. 4 Indiana 7, No. 5 Ohio State, 5:11 remaining 1H.

Jamari Sharpe makes an excellent play
Zach Osterman
Sharpe’s read on the throw and play on the ball against Jeremiah Smith there, to set up Amare Ferrell’s interception, was just outstanding defense. Turbo Richard goes in from seven yards out two plays later to give Indiana the lead.

Buckeyes doing some interesting stuff essentially playing three deep safeties. It’s not specific to this game but obviously affects what IU can do in the pass game.
Neither quarterback really in any rhythm to speak of yet.

Indiana needs better run-pass feel
Zach Osterman
Been some noticeable running against pass looks and passing against run looks here so far. Another game where it feels like things just aren’t quite synced up. Some interesting pre-snap looks helping keep Ohio State a little off center at least.

Indiana holds in the red zone
Zach Osterman
Ohio State’s scripted drive goes well until it doesn’t. Stalled out inside the 10. Looked like Ryan Day almost called/tried to call timeout before what was clearly a broken play call on third down. Field goal good.

Ohio State-Indiana predictions: Will IU football beat OSU in Big Ten game today?
- Zach Osterman, IndyStar, Indiana 24-20: “So hard to pick this game apart. Ohio State’s more balanced offense. The Buckeyes’ depleted defense. Indiana’s explosiveness. Jeremiah Smith against IU’s pass rush. In what might be the best atmosphere in Memorial Stadium history, that pass rush does just a bit more.”
- Michael Niziolek, Herald-Times, Ohio State 24-17: “Jeremiah Smith, current Heisman frontrunner, will have a chance to bolster his resume on Saturday. The Hoosiers have done a solid job the last two years covering Smith — he doesn’t have a receiving touchdown against IU — but this year feels different. He’s leveled up, a point Cignetti made earlier this week, and Indiana’s defense has struggled some in recent weeks. In a game where little separates the teams, Smith feels like the difference-maker, just as Fernando Mendoza was a year ago.”
